When Carol Griffee died in 2011, the veteran journalist surprised no one with her desire to avoid the pomp and circumstance of a funeral. But too many people revered the gruff woman who in her day brought a shotgun to the newspaper office during a murder investigation and trial. Those friends and former colleagues threw a party in her honor. They also contributed to a scholarship fund in her name.

With the help of those contributors, Arkansas Press Women is honoring Griffee, a long-time member, officer and APW president, with a $1,500 scholarship that will be awarded to a journalism student who embodies the personal qualities for which Carol was widely known and respected: integrity, commitment to accuracy and excellence, and unwavering support of the First Amendment and the Freedom of Information Act.

Preference will be given to graduate students who are approaching the end of their studies and to those who are working in the areas in which Carol excelled: environmental, investigative and political reporting.

The deadline to apply is March 1, 2014.

An application and more information about the scholarship can be found here. The scholarship is a one-time award but could be continued if more money become available.
